Layer 4

“Layer 4” is an expression of the unknown, of emptiness, encompassing the distant past, the recent past, and the present moment. Life is a system, a phenomenon of layers, formed by different time intervals. It contains the distant past, the recent past, and the present moment. The present moment is an act of connection and knowing, as the vague sum of the past. Just as memory needs soil ( “Memory needs soil.” Alain Schapp), the present moment also needs the past to form memory.

Attempting to interpret the past is possible through a connection that is more intellectual and spiritual than objective. Art establishes itself at a point where all these connections are experienced most intensely. When the objective starting point focuses on the past, objects that we interpret, as well as those not present in our previous experiences, can act as a stimulus for the creator. As a result of this influence, the object or the void outside the object transforms into a trace on the surface, becoming an artifact of the present moment. As seen in “Red Layer,” “Purple Layer,” “Selected Area,” and “Marked Area,” the surface itself is now the void.

In essence, isn’t the artist’s endeavor to strip the object of its external, three-dimensional form to create its mental and spiritual inner self, to sense what is hidden and complete it on the surface? Layer 4 is the act of constructing the aesthetic of depths, both objectively and intellectually; it is the re-establishment of layers formed and stratified over time, becoming an expression of time itself; it is time itself as a void, making the unknown knowable. Layer 4 is a discovery related to the content of life, a timeless and placeless experience related to sensing the energy of existence’s formation within time.
