Traces and Shadows

Traces and Shadows
Focusing on the void left by objects as traces, I question the complex relationship between objects and time. Specifically, I am interested in the traces objects leave behind rather than the objects themselves. I focus on areas of tension such as negative-positive, male-female, fullness, and emptiness in relation to the object’s trace.

For me, another indicator of an object’s existence, separate from the object itself, is its shadow. The trace left by an object is proof that it was present at a specific moment in time. A shadow, however, concerns the object’s relationship in another dimension. The presence of an object’s shadow is proof that the object exists there, at that moment. While a trace preserves its physical structure, a shadow adapts its shape to the form it falls upon. Like the inner aspects beyond the object, shadows and traces tell us much about objects, and even events, depending on time. Instead of the image of objects, I question the concept of time by following their traces and shadows, which prove their existence in different temporal dimensions. The shadow represents the present, while the trace represents the past.

The chair imagery I have used in my paintings serves as a symbol for static concepts with strong internal dynamics such as Power, Status, and Authority. Generally, the chair imagery becomes a shadow, moving away from its association with status and shifting towards a momentary value. It manifests on the surface sometimes as a black shadow, sometimes as a white shadow. The black shadow is an extension of the body, while the white shadow is an extension of the mind. The black shadow, an extension of the body, gains dimension under the control of the light that causes its existence; it is dependent on it. The white shadow, an extension of the mind, is under the control of common sense and reason. It integrates with the surface on which it exists by leaving a trace.
