Devabil Kara, who graduated from the Department of Painting at Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts in 1986, expanded his artistic practice into an international context by studying lithography at the Salzburg International Summer Academy in 1987. The artist completed his Proficiency in Art education in 1993 and deepened his visual language with diverse cultural and intellectual layers through his studies in the United States between 1996 and 1997.
To date, Kara has held 36 solo exhibitions, five of which were abroad, and participated in numerous group exhibitions. He has been honored with fifteen awards, including the State Painting Competition, the DYO Painting Competition, and the “Wallace Hartley Artist of the Year Award” presented within the scope of World Art Day. His academic publications include Ways of Seeing (2021), On the Formation and Problems of Visual Language in Art, and Perception and Art: Discussions and Evaluations on the Art of the Future (2024). The artist currently continues his work as a faculty member in the Department of Painting at Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts.
Kara’s artistic practice is shaped not by direct representation of the object, but by the traces, voids, and temporal sediments it leaves behind. This approach re-examines the ontological status of the image along the tension line between the visible and the erased. The artist treats the surface not merely as a field of representation, but also as a space of absence, loss, and remembrance.
In this context, Kara’s works propose a visual thinking practice that suspends the linear flow of time. The discontinuous continuity between past and future is re-established through images; the object gains existence not through its material presence, but through the trace it leaves. These traces, sometimes erased, sometimes intensified on surfaces, reveal the fragile structure of memory.
The artist’s production transcends representation, opening up a critical space that questions the limits of perception and the processes of visual language formation. Thus, Kara’s works can be read as a multi-layered field of thought oscillating between trace and absence, time and space, and remembrance and forgetting.
